Night Thirty-Nine

The dry media was an invigorating exploration, but I was missing my atmospheric surface-scapes.  Here then is a Night made entirely of paint.

Night Thirty-Eight

Today I am thinking a lot about the process of making 100 pieces - about sticking with ideas and fleshing them out versus leaving them behind.

Nights Twenty-Nine through Thirty-Six

Here they are - all of them.  I managed to continue drawing as I visited Washington DC last week.  But I was forced to change my materials.  I gave up the paint and instead brought along white and black charcoal, a graphite stick, and a brush for washes.  The results were a little awkward at first, but I soon began building a vocabulary of new marks and shapes.

Night Thirty-Six

  I reintroduced paint here.

When I saw where it was in the format, I couldn't resist incorporating the line from the paper into this composition.

I thought this one was particularly successful.  I was able to find some marks that were intrinsic to the medium of charcoal.  Some of the longer lines in the piece are influenced by Hayley Perry's Hundred Days Project.

  A little awkward at first...

Stay Tuned

I will be in Washington D.C. until Friday, but I plan to continue drawing.  I will post the work when I return.

Night Twenty-Five

Playing with the temperature of that white again.

Night Twenty-Four

The spirea petals I collected have since yellowed in their bowl.  Using them today, I am struck by the warmth of their whiteness and find an urge to explore a series of white work.  One day....

Night Twenty-One

After twenty images the process for making these is taking shape.  I begin by shaping and placing the collage elements which allows me to set up the composition immediately.  Then I begin pushing and pulling the surrounding space until I distill the image.

Night Twenty

The trick is to keep going until I find it.  This particular image was elusive at first.

Night Eighteen

I'm really trying to focus on spending time while painting in pursuit of the image - allowing myself to "find" it.  This means creating marks, taking them in, and deciding to preserve or alter them.  It always results in a more electrifying surface and satisfying piece.

Night Fourteen

I definitely grounded this composition with some sort of land - perhaps a recent image on Catherine Singer's blog was lurking in my subconscious.

Night Thirteen

We have spirea on our property and they've been in bloom the past few weeks.  The petals are small and abundant and seem to pepper all nearby surfaces with a sprinkle of white.  They're like summer's snow - and I couldn't resist using them.
