Night One-Hundred!

It wasn't easy finishing up this year.  I have been working hard the passed three weeks to prepare for teaching during the fall semester.  And it interfered with my completion of the One-Hundred Days Project.  But here they are, the final two images.  I can close the book on another productive summer.  It was a great group this year, and I found myself participating more in the online community.  Congratulations to everyone who finished.  And thanks, it was great working alongside all of you.

Night Seventy-Two

I created this on Sunday or Monday back at home in Massachusetts.  The palette is strikingly different as I am using acrylic paints again, and I had a long break from making these.  I feel I lost a bit of the rhythm, but I will find it again.  Currently, I have five or six more completed pieces in the studio waiting to be photographed.

At this point I had transitioned to making these as my main body of work.  I used oil paints liberally with collage - not very archival...And allowed the palette to broaden.

This particular piece got a great reaction from a few of the residents at our open studio.

Already in the possession of one of the Island's other residents!

Night Sixty-Six

I think I had a string of really successful images starting here.

Night Sixty-Five

This began a very successful day towards the end of my residence at Norton Island.  I was allowing my imagery to become more rough and really feeling connected to what I was making.  And I allowed this and the other body of work I created on the Island to collide.

Night Sixty-Four

  Very brown oil paint...

Night Sixty-Three

By this time I threw caution to the wind and began using the oil paint I brought along.  It reacted almost immediately to the tar paper by darkening.  I watched it continue to darken until it had thoroughly oxidized.

Night Sixty-One

I only brought along dry media for this project.  As I did the last time I went travelling this summer.  But I began to feel very inhibited by it.  And the work wasn't turning out like I envisioned.  This and an attempt to fix the images with spray that reacted to the roofing paper left these three or four "nights" a little awkward, in my opinion.

Night Sixty

I am finally back - from the residency and from vacation.  I was able to continue with the project while I was in residence in Maine, but not when I was on vacation in Montana.  So the next few days will have me working to catch up.  Here, for now, are the images I have completed.

  What? you say, leaving again!!!

Yes, it's true.  I am home today having just returned from a magical two weeks on Norton Island.  And tomorrow I pack up and head out for a family vacation to Montana.  So expect another blogging hiatus.

To whet your appetite, here is an image from the slew of work I created on the island.

And here is the view from my studio in Maine.

  See you in ten days.

Night Fifty-Nine

Norton Island Residency

I am leaving Wednesday morning for the wee willy-waggs of Maine where I will be in residence at Norton Island for a week and a half.  Myself and twenty other artists and writers will be enjoying the surf and scenery and working hard.  I will keep creating my Hundred Days pieces and I will post them for you when I return.

And while he's not participating the Hundred Days project, this piece is certainly drawing on his image.

Night Fifty-Five

I was at odds with this image, and wasn't really getting it to work.  Then I turned it upside-down...et voila!

Night Fifty-Four

I'm really excited by the images I am finding lately.  I feel like I am unearthing something new and fresh in my work.
